The Backpiece Montage

Well, it was never going to be easy, quick or instant satisfaction, but, we're well on the right road now thanks again to Billy at Eternal Images of Goole.

Many many moons ago - when i was 17 to be precise, I already had some small stuff on my arms (two-insignificant 'can't be bothered to do a good - job tattoos' on each upper arm) and decided to get something on my back. Gentle John had a reputation that preceeded him in Hanley, Stoke-On-Trent and rather than sticking to the usual haunt in broad street, he (by reputation and reccomendation) was the only place i wanted to go to to get some ink! Quick bus ride later and a few hours in the chair and i was the proud owner of an absolutely great Dragon on my top-right back. Really Good. Great detail and really vibrant colours. I remember showing it off afterwards and people saying how brilliant it was.

Anyhow, a few years later saw an addition on the opposite side by Pete Sheriff in Scunthorpe. Don't know what happened to Pete - I heard various rumours but none that i'd repeat here. To me, he just disappeared of the face of the earth. Anyway, Pete added a scantily clad warrior-ess on the opposite shoulder. He did it at his house while i watched an episode of the waltons on a Sunday late morning / dinnertime. His mum i think it was made me a cuppa. The things you remember!!

Time took its' usual toll and now, some 18 years since the dragon and around 15 since the lady, it was time to get spruced up. Billy always said he'd rework the back bits i had. They were too big to merely cover up. Again, as with every tattoo i had pre-30 year old, I regret never having used the 'canvas' better - or rather bigger! Maybe it's a good thing. I get to have a second wind at being all excited about "new-ink".

A brilliant start. All tarted up. Dark Red/brown hair. Re-chiseled face. Great freehand background of an inca pyramid with waterfall in the distance and assorted jungle foliage. Ties in with the jungle motage on my left arm brilliantly. Nice freehand hummingbird added too.
Note the improved bust....lol

Session2:

Just as pleasing. Some weeks later was a re-touched / coloured dragon.
Nicely balanced with the japanese styled arm with warrior and peony flower. That arm still needs work but that's another plan altogether.

Need to carefully think and plan what is going to fit in with this. I want a full backpiece eventually and although these reworks are great, it's not going to be all that easy.

Ooh will you look at that! Decided on a nice Koi for Billy to have a go at. Consulted him first as to if this is going to be the start of the grand scheme of things and yes, WE ARE GO!! Thank crap for that! (anagram of 'carp' lol.)

Now, as my missus moaned like a good un when she had a small (by my standards) butterfly mid-lower back, i wasn't looking forward to this spine-area work but to be honest it wasn't that bad. I found out later on that there are worse areas. Billy says anywhere that you are ticklish will hurt more. Not as bad as i expected though. Look at that bad boy! Can't wait for next sitting next sitting next sitting!

Session4:

Addition of a large flower falling down through water at the top. I'm unsure if it's a peony or blossom but it's got some fine detail in it. There's also a small koi coming down to meet the larger one.

We nearly made a humungous error and put another flower on the bottom left with flames running behind it and up to the warrioresses legs. It looked "okay", not great not brilliant, just okay. We both looked at it for a few seconds and decided it just detracted rom the whole piece. It Didn't sit right so it got alcohol - wiped off. Roll on next session. :-)

Session5:

'Roy' the Koi (as he is now known) has developed spots (or sumi type markings). The fins have all of the shading complete and we have added some more maple type leaves. The whole idea is to leave the majority of the background on this side black cloud swirls with autumn-toned leaves.

The opposite side is planned (at the moment) to be shaded bamboo stalks with some oversized bamboo leaves thrown in.The water will of course be in shades of blue from mid to dark and skin tone.
Having the shading done today was absolute bliss after all the outline work. Nearly fell asleep

Session6:

coming soon - the sooner the better...
